Fergus McCaffrey is proud to present Marcia Hafif: Change and Continuity, 1962 – 1974. It is the artist’s fourth solo presentation with the gallery since 2015, and her first in Japan. The years between 1962 and 1974 mark some of the most transformative of Hafif’s career, as she moved from Rome back to her native California before settling in New York in 1971. The Rome drawings demonstrate the first incidence of Hafif’s repetitive vertical mark making, a signature technique she will return to throughout her career, most pointedly upon her arrival in New York’s early 1970s downtown art scene, testing conceptual and tactile limits with various media to achieve new ends.
ファーガス・マカフリー東京では9月24日より「Marcia Hafif: Change and Continuity 1962 – 1974」展を開催します。本展は2015年以来ハフィフにとって弊廊での4回目の個展、また日本では初の個展となります。今回展示される3つのシリーズは1962年から1974年、ローマから故郷のカリフォルニアに戻った後ニューヨークに移住する、ハフィフの生涯のなかでも最も変化に富んだ時期に制作されました。 ローマ滞在期に制作されたドローイングはハフィフを語る上で欠かせない垂直方向の筆跡の反復が初めに現れた作品群です。1970年代初頭ニューヨークのダウンタウンのアートシーンに身を置いた彼女は垂直の筆跡反復を再び採用し、その後、全キャリアを通じて様々なメディアとの組み合わせによってその概念的・触知的な限界を試しながら、新しい結果を目指し続けました。
